Foliage can be leathery and glossy green on top and felted silver-grey beneath or silvery-grey and pubescent on top and bottom. It bears yellow catkins in the spring.

Can tolerate acid to alkaline soil (pH 5.0 to 8.0)

Native across almost all of northern North America. One of the most extremely cold hardy plants, hardy to USDA Zone 1. Very tolerant of saturated soils and high pH. It's drought tolerance is untested but is likely good.
